Gliders Key Vocabulary

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 5 months ago

Picture and animations came from http://nasaexplores.nasa.gov .

Forces of Flight
  • Lift: A force that keeps the plane in the air. It is created by the shape of the wing and uneven air pressure.
  • Gravity: The force that pulls objects toward the center of the earth.
  • Thrust: A force created by an engine that moves the aircraft forward.
  • Drag: A force created by an object running into the air.  It always slows down an object.

Gliders

  • Pitch: The up and down movement of the nose of the aircraft.
Computer animation of the Wright 1902 aircraft
showing the nose moving up and down.
  • Roll: The up and down motion of the wings.
Computer animation of the Wright 1902 aircraft
showing the wings moving up and down.

  • Yaw: The side to side motion of the wings.

Computer animation of the Wright 1902 aircraft
showing the nose moving side to side.

Wing aspect Ratio = length of wing /width of wing

Bernoulli's Principle: The air must travel faster over the top of the airfoil creating lower pressure on the top of the wing. The higher pressure underneath the wing pushes the wing up giving it lift.

The pics. really help me understand pich, roll, yaw, and the 4 different direction things: lift, thrust, drag, and gravity. Maybe add a pic. to show the 4 things. See you in science tommorrow! =)

In "The New Way Things Work", almost all of the flying machines had different kinds of thrust, but they all had low drag. Is there any kind of aircraft that I don't know of that has medium or high drag?

i like the wiki because this way we can post comments.

the pictures helped me learn more about what the vocab means. overall I think that the projects are going to be fun. Those water bottle rockets look fun and so does the roller coaster project.

Shouldn't the teachers lock the teacher made pages, becasue someone could for example replace everything on the "important vocab" page with "ROFL!"

I think the website idea thing is really cool, it's a good way to check the vocab incase something happens to our sheets or we leave it at school or something, or if our definitions aren't helping us enough.I still think it's pretty cool that all of the forces together and everything can make a plane fly.

This website is awesome! I think it is a great idea and a great way to share our knowledge with each other
