Buddhism: Key Symbols

What are their major symbols?  (Shanghai)

There are many symbols that represent Buddhism. There are many Buddha statues in Temples. The statues are of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, and the original Buddha. He left his palace in India to become a Holy man. Lots of his followers made these sacred statues. Another major symbol is the Lotus flower, and it symbolizes purity and divine birth. This flower grows underwater, and sprouts out to the above. Then, it withers away, and dies. It shows nothing in life is perfect. Also, another major symbol is the Eight Spoked Wheel. It symbolizes the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation (rebirth). The eight spokes outside the circle shows that Buddha taught eight ways of life.

The lion symbol is the most potent symbol. It shows strength. Also, footprints are a major symbol, because it shows enlightenment. Enlightenment is a state of mind where one can understand pain and suffering. The Begging Bowl represents the story that shortly came before Buddha reached Enlightenment; a woman offered him some milk rice.

Buddhist followers have lots of different holy symbols. There is Lotus, the begging bowl, lions, deer and especially the Buddha himself.  There are some other symbols that are holy like Stupa temples, the Bodhi tree, and the conch horn .Those are most of the specific Buddhist symbols that Buddhist people believe are holy.           The Buddha is the most important symbol. He was a teacher. They worship him. Buddha didn’t like to be thought as a person so; there were some symbols to represent him. The lion is a key symbol because it usually sits at the altar with him. The deer is one because it represents him.  The begging bowl is another important symbol because it represents Buddha himself.

The lotus plant is an important symbol. It is an important symbol because it represents peace. It not only represents peace, but it also represents serenity which means to be calm. That is important because they believe that is it important to be calm. This plant is native to Asia. The flowers are very big. It also signifies the soul.

All in all, the Buddha, Lotus, the begging bowl, the lion, and the deer are important in the Buddhist faith.  They are keys symbols. Some are to represent Buddha himself and some are a flower like lotus. There is a similarity between all of them and that is that they all represent Buddha in a way. The lotus and the Buddha are to represent peace and the deer and the lion represent Buddha and Buddha means peace.

What are the houses of worship like? (Kusming)

The stupa is the oldest and most prevalent form of Buddhist architecture. It is also the most sacred monument found in all of the ancient Buddhist countries.
The stupa is filled with many sacred images and sacred forms of Buddhist art. They are also filled with mantras. The stupa has many different symbols and pictures inside and outside. There are also statues that surround most stupas. The stupa has a very ancient design. The emperor named Asoka was the first person to encourage the building of the stupas. The earliest forms that can be properly called stupas are hemispherical masses of the earth that are raised on a base, and stone or brick faced.
The stupa is a place where all Buddha’s are abiding. The stupa is the latest Buddhist religious monument and was originally only a simple mound of mud or clay to cover supposed relics of the Buddha. The stupa is a spiritual monument. The stupa probably started as a burial mound for a pre-Buddha. They can be found in any country that Buddhism is practiced in. Some of the oldest known prototypes are the enormous mounds of earth in India, which were royal burial places. The wooden masts that were inside the center of these enormous mounds probably carried umbrellas that served as a symbol of authority and royalty. Early Buddha’s not only respected the royal symbol of the stupa, but the umbrella they also used, as a symbol to represent the Buddha.
The stupa represents the symbol of enlightenment and is one of the most ancient forms of Buddhist art. The foundation, symmetry, and contents of the stupa, creates an incredible power to those who even look upon it. The stupa also emanates blessings and peace. The stupa is designed with deep symbolism and sacred geometry. The shape of the stupa represents the Buddha. Each part of the stupa represents a part of the Buddha. They represent the Buddha’s body, mind, and speech.
